Yepp Gmail is the king and there is a reason for that - they listen to their customers. While microsoft, yahoo, and all the other email service providers have not changed the structure and look and feel of their services the same, gmail has evolved. It has become smarter. You can do better searches (anyone who's tried to search through yahoomail knows what I'm talking about), you can segregate emails under different emails, and you can "personalize" how you receive your emails.
The only place I feel that google hasn't focused on is a desktop email client. People on linux use Thunderbird, on windows use outlook, and Unibox? on mac (I wouldn't know since I don't own a mac). An email client is really essential. I have a mobile email client too because frankly I have a bunch of email addresses (work, play, marketing, etc.) and I want all of them to open up in one place. This is where I feel that Microsoft has always stayed ahead of Google, though anyone who has used open-source or third-party email clients knows that Microsoft isn't doing a great job in this regard either.
